When you need a break from the trails — or when you're looking for something the whole family will talk about for years — Carter Caves State Resort Park makes for a perfect day trip from Williams Creek Cabins. Just 24.2 miles away, this remarkable 2,000-acre state park is home to a stunning network of more than 20 caverns, seven natural bridges, over 30 miles of hiking trails, and a beautiful lake for fishing and boating. It's one of eastern Kentucky's true natural treasures, and we're proud it's right in our backyard.

The Caves

Carter Caves is named for what it does best. The Carter and Cascade Cave system contains more than 20 individual caverns, four of which are open for guided tours. Each cave has its own personality and its own story.

  • X Cave — The most popular cave in the system, named for two intersecting passageways that form the letter X. Filled with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and a seven-foot-diameter Giant Stalactite formation. The famous Pipe Organ formation actually produces different musical tones when struck.

  • Cascade Cave — Features a breathtaking 30-foot underground waterfall, alongside stunning rooms like the Cathedral Room, the Hanging Gardens of King Solomon, and the Lake Room.

  • Saltpetre Cave — A dry, historic cave where saltpeter was mined to make gunpowder during the War of 1812. Pioneer Simon Kenton's name is carved on the wall near the entrance, dated 1783.

  • Bat Cave — Open summers only, this is the largest cave in the park and home to an estimated 40,000 protected Indiana bats that hibernate here each winter.

  • Laurel Cave — Open Memorial Day through Labor Day with a free permit from the Welcome Center. Access also includes Horn Hollow and Rimstone Caves.

Trails & Natural Bridges

Over 30 miles of hiking trails wind through the park's forests and hollows, passing seven natural bridges. Smokey Bridge — 90 feet high and 120 feet wide — is the largest natural bridge in all of Kentucky. Carter Cave Natural Bridge holds the distinction of being the only natural bridge in the state with a paved road on top. Longer adventures await on the 7.2-mile 4Cs Trail and the 10-mile Kiser Hollow multi-use trail, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders.

Smokey Valley Lake & Outdoors

Kentucky's first designated trophy bass lake, 45-acre Smokey Valley Lake is a favorite of anglers chasing largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. The park also offers pedal boat and rowboat rentals, guided canoe trips on Tygarts Creek ($12 adults / $6 kids), and excellent birding throughout the property.
